چکیده

We use the microlensing variability observed for nine gravitationally lensed quasars to show that the accretion disk size at 2500Å is related to the black hole mass by log(R2500/cm) = (15.6± 0.2) + (0.54± 0.28) log(MBH/10M⊙). This scaling is consistent with the expectation from thin disk theory (R ∝ M BH), but it implies that black holes radiate with relatively low efficiency, log(η) = −1.29 ± 0.44 + log(L/LE) where η = L/(Ṁc ). These sizes are also larger, by a factor of ∼ 3, than the size needed to produce the observed 0.8μm quasar flux by thermal radiation from a thin disk with the same T ∝ R temperature profile. More sophisticated disk models are clearly required, particularly as our continuing observations improve the precision of the measurements and yield estimates of the scaling with wavelength and accretion rate. Accretion Disk Instabilities, CDM models and their role in Quasar Evolution

We have developed a consistent analytical model to describe the observed evolution of the quasar luminosity function. Our model combines black hole mass distributions based on the Press Schechter theory of the structure formation in the Universe with quasar luminosity functions resulting from a physics-based emission model that takes into account the time-dependent phenomena occurring in the ac...

Deriving the Quasar Luminosity Function from Accretion Disk Instabilities

We have derived the quasar luminosity function assuming that the quasar activity is driven by a thermal-viscous unstable accretion disk around a supermassive black hole. The instabilities produce large amplitude, long-term variability of a single source. We take a light curve of a single source and calculate the luminosity function, from the function of time it spends at each luminosity. Convol...

An accretion model for the growth of the central black hole associated with ionization instability in quasars

A possible accretion model associated with the ionization instability of quasar disks is proposed to address the growth of the central black hole harbored in the host galaxy. The evolution of quasars in cosmic time is assumed to change from a highly active state to a quiescent state triggered by the S-shaped ionization instability of the quasar accretion disk. For a given external mass transfer...

The Dependence of Quasar Variability on Black Hole Mass

In order to investigate the dependence of quasar variability on fundamental physical parameters like black hole mass, we have matched quasars from the QUEST1 Variability Survey with broad-lined objects from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. The matched sample contains ≈ 100 quasars, and the Sloan spectra are used to estimate black hole masses and bolometric luminosities. Variability amplitudes are ...

Microlensing of the Lensed Quasar Sdss0924+0219

We analyze V, I and H band HST images and two seasons of R-band monitoring data for the gravitationally lensed quasar SDSS0924+0219. We clearly see that image D is a point-source image of the quasar at the center of its host galaxy. We can easily track the host galaxy of the quasar close to image D because microlensing has provided a natural coronograph that suppresses the flux of the quasar im...
